Apprentice Mechanic

Thanks to the constant increase in the number of car owners, mechanics are still some of the most in-demand tradespeople not only in Australia but also in the other parts of the world. Because of the success of mechanics and the importance of their services, more people are becoming interested in pursuing a career in motor mechanics and automotive. To be a motor mechanic expert, however, one needs to become an apprentice mechanic first. An apprentice mechanic is tradesman-in-training who works under the supervision of a skilled mechanic.

Education of an apprentice mechanic

To qualify for a mechanic apprenticeship, an aspiring apprentice mechanic must first complete the twelfth grade of secondary school. It is also important for an aspiring apprentice mechanic to have satisfactory grades in mathematics, English and science, especially physics. Because most employers prefer applicants who drive, driving skills and clean driving records are important to qualify as an apprentice mechanic.

An apprentice mechanic attends an apprenticeship program five days a week: four days of on-the-job training and one day of classroom-set lecture. The one day classroom-set lecture, as part of the training and education of soon-to-be apprentice mechanic, is spent in the Technical and Further Education (TAFE) college of choice.

Role of an apprentice mechanic

The role of an apprentice mechanic is simple: to follow the instructions given out by the skilled mechanic. The job of an apprentice mechanic, more or less, is to assist the skilled mechanic with everything he or she might need. This may include everything from installing air-conditioning systems and repairing engine transmissions to removing car tyres and greasing torque wrenches. The skilled mechanic who supervises and trains the apprentice mechanic is accountable for all the actions of his or her protege.

Importance of a mechanic apprenticeship

In Australia, it is mandatory for all aspiring tradespeople to complete an apprenticeship to become full-pledged tradespeople. Mechanic apprenticeship, after all, is like the graduate school of auto mechanics. An apprentice mechanic needs only the best education and training to provide high quality services to future clients. The only way to receive proper training and education is to work under the tutelage of skilled mechanics who already know the ins and outs of motor mechanics. The only way to become great, after all, is to learn from the best. An apprentice mechanic needs to receive firsthand tips and instructions from skilled mechanics to help them prepare for the tradesman's certificate and workshop license applications.
